This happened to me one time. A co worker seemed really interested in me and he started asking me personal questions. I got the hint and told him I was already involved, then he said "Hold on baby girl, you got me all wrong...." I felt like a fool to have thought he was making advances toward me, but I still believe that was his true intention no matter what his explanation was. I think he was trying to save himself the embarrassment so he tried to make ME look like the fool (in which he did). I just shrugged off the whole situation. We still talked a little, but not much. And eventually communication just completely taperred off. I still don't appreciate how he tried to make me look stupid, but I knew what he was doing.

You can't really make someone tell you the truth. It sounds like they were busted and now embarrassed about it and trying to say they just want to be friends. Follow along and be friends...take it slow and see what happens next.
