Depends on a few factors, but the average is 2 years to 5 years ;) A good site to start on if you're new to bettas is below.

A big help to bettas living a long life(3-5 years) depends greatly on how they are kept. Just because bettas are labyrinth fish(giving them the ability to breathe air) doesn't meant that life in that little bowl can't be more enjoyable for them. Keep up on your water changes(about once a week especially for those small bowls) and don't overfeed them. Often people marvel at males territory display when you put a mirror next to their bowl or tank. This is also a form of exercises for them. It raises their blood pressure and it takes muscle to spread those fins out! Stirring up the water every now and then is not a bad thing either as your betta will instinctively swim against the current. I know some of these things may sound a little cruel but more bettas die from inactivity that old age.

3-5 years. Of course store bought bettas are generally 6 months to a year old.

2-3 years is the average but I have had and have heard from many people that have had them live for 5 years or even more.

As long as any other fish. Every one is different. I have one that has been in a fresh water tank with my other fish for about a year now and he shows no signs of slowing down.

I have had mine for 4 years, but I think that is an unusually long life. I won him, Marlin, at a fair. :-)
