SHE has to build three ships and see which one holds the most weight it has to go in the water to determine that. What should she build it with so that it may float in the water without sinking?

Balsa wood/foam packing material like a meat tray/and a plastic bag or rubber tube buoyed by air....all will float...make three identical sizes to see the carrying capacity/weight....

aluminum foil works good for this experiment when I do them with my students. It is really not about the material, but rather about the shape and design of the floating vessel. pennys are good mass measure becasue they are about 1gram a piece.

Really anything waterproof. It doesn't even have to be a naturally bouyant material. You can make anything float if you make it the right shape.

We made ours out of the Styrofoam bottom that our hamburger came in. We washed it very good. That was the most convenient and they all came in the same size.

Try platic household containers with air tight lids, ballons and cork will work well too which you can get from your local fishing tackle shop.
