Tachyons are any theoretical particles that travel faster than the speed of light. They have not been proven to exist. They cannot (in theory) travel at less than the speed of light.

A hypothetical particle that obeys all the laws of relativity and still travels faster than light. In order to do that it would have to have an imaginary rest mass, be able to travel infinitely fast, would loose energy as it went faster and gain energy as it went slower, would have zero energy at infinite speed, could never travel as slow or slower than the speed of light and would require infinite energy to slow down to the speed of light. As far as I know, it is just a hypothetical mathematical exercise as to what would be required for any material object to obey the laws of relativity and yet still travel faster than light, and not a prediction that such a thing existed.

The word is based on the Greek"tachys," meaning swift. Ordinary particles that always travel at speeds slower than c are called "tardyons," and particles like photons that travel at the speed c are called "luxons."
