I know someone that continuously lies, the big problem is that they have a shocking memory. This person is often caught out in these lies but will then lie to cover the lie that they first lied about. Are they doing it for the fun of it or are they just an habitual lire

People lie for two reasons. These lies are a practice of deception based on self-preservation. They are ashamed of themselves because they know they have done wrong, and they do not want to deal with the consequences.
All other reasons fall onto those two catagories. When they say "I just wanted to spare your feelings" it's because they do not want to deal with the consequences of that person being hurt. When they llie because they got caught doing something wrong, it's because they are ashamed.
When they lie about everything, they are pathological liars. They are ashamed of themselves and their own perceived shortcomings, so they lie to make themselves seem more interesting, more skilled, more cultured, more important, etc.

Sometimes people "lie" in humor, to get someone going. This is not really an act of deception for self-preservation, but rather deception in humor. This is usually clarified immediately.

yeah, my first ex was like that. She'd lie even if the truth was a better story! She alienated me from my friends back then and had a boyfriend wanting to beat me up, all from lies. Her own daughters know her for what she is now, nobody likes her.
