No red-light districts, but there are places where the whore-houses are located. They're called "cabaret" or "hostess-clubs," and though prostitution itself isn't technically legal, they do it anyway. Police turn a blind eye because of the yakuza mafia owning both the clubs and the police. So what can you do? The same is in pretty much every country.

I think saying that the cops don't care is going a little too far.
The cops in the US would like to put an end to prostitution, but the arresting and prosecuting of prostitutes is not always the priority. Same with Japan.
Mind you, it is illegal to buy and sell sex for money in Japan in case you were wondering. So if you get caught, you go to jail.

As for there being a red light district, yes there is.
But like any other country, illegal activity is usually run by the mob and you never want to get truly involved with them.

Kabukicho in Shinjunku is the closest thing to a "red light zone" in Tokyo, but just about any entertainment district in Japan has some kind of prostitution.

Actually hostess clubs are not whore houses. Those are bath houses or este, massage houses. Japanese hostesses and prostitutes are not synonymous. As for girls in Japan from poorer countries, many prostitute but use hostessing or cultural dancing as a cover up.

Yes the district is in Shinjuku and it is called Kabukicho. The old Yoshiwara area still has stuff, and Roppongi has lots of prostitution.
Look those up all over the web my friend. I have been to all of em.
