you can only try to figure out the meaning based on where and how it's used in the context of the sentence. If you're still stumped, take a guess of its meaning and go with it. Don't spend loads of time trying to figure it out.

Vocab only truly matters on sentence completion questions, which are less than 1/4 of 1 section of the SATs. When (not if!) you see words you don't recognize
(a) don't panic, it's expected that you won't know some of them!
(b) skip this question and return to it when you're done with the section
(c) use your elimination skills to get rid of as many other answers as possible
(d) if you have 3 or fewer answers left, consider guessing.

Don't stress the vocab; instead, make sure to take full-length practice tests. Most test-takers report test fatigue to be the biggest issue!

You could also try to break the words down (ex. take off prefixes/suffexes, look for root words, etc) to see if they look more familiar. I also find that sometimes just pronouncing a word that appears unfamiliar outloud actually makes me realize i have heard it somewhere before and that gives me a clue. Obviously you can't do this too loudly at the SATs, but you could still whisper a few under your breath to see if it helps. Good luck!

First read the sentence given and determine if the word that fits is a neg. or pos. word then you can narrow down your choices
Then Read the questions and see what kind of word fits (noun, adj, ect) and see what words still fit
If there are still choices left read them in the sentence to see if they sound right

You simply have to make a choice. There is nothing else you can do on the test.
