Your water may break but that is rare most women have to have thier water broke. You may have contractions wich are sharp or daul pains. That is the only ways i knew before i had my son. But if you think your in labor go to the Doc right now it doesnt matter if it is false labore it is still important Good Luck and God Bless

it's different for everyone. get lots of women's experiences, and then you might be prepared!
we went to my in-laws' house (1 hour away) 5 days before my due date. wasn't thinking about the fact that the midwives had advised us to stay close to home as my due date approached! (it was fine, we had plenty of time)
had a nice cornish hen dinner, my husband made love to me (very quietly) in his old attic bedroom. then the fun started! it was in the wee hours by that time, so i didn't make the connection that i was having CONTRACTIONS, my discomfort was NOT gas.
didn't sleep a wink, thankfully my hubby caught some zzzs though. enormous me went up and down the tiny spiral staircase several times, thinking i had to go to the bathroom.
no such luck.
at breakfast i didn't eat a thing. very unusual for me. still not making the connection. then someone (my mother-in-law?) asked some questions about this "gas" i thought i had. that's when we realized it wasn't gas at all!
felt kind of stupid, cuz when you're that pregnant, you'd think you'd notice the signs of labour. i think being tired contributed to my stupidness!
so we called the midwives, they said come home right now, call on the way if your water breaks or anything unusual happens.
my water didn't break, the midwives broke it for me at maybe 10 pm that night. so water breaking is not necessarily one of your first signs. but once the water breaks, labour usually progresses pretty quickly.
baby was born a couple hours later. the whole process took over 24 hours, and for maybe a third of that time i didn't even realize what was going on!
looking back, if anyone had told me that contractions are similar (although intensity varies and gets MUCH stronger) to menstrual cramps, i would've clued in, because that's what the 'gas' really felt like.
good luck with it.

I don't tend to agree with the ones who say it's intense pain..and I'm so sorry for those who aren't as understanding! I know with your first child it's scary & you don't know what to expect however every woman and every pregnancy are different. With my second son the last two months I was having braxton hicks contractions and then one night at about 2 a.m. my water just broke. I thought I wet myself LOL but I never felt any pain other then a little cramping like period cramps ...the whole time I was in labor I was walking around and talking and laughin..you wouldn't have even known I was in labor ...until the last hour right before the baby was born! Then the pain set in. So if you are feeling any differently then you have the last few month I say see your doctor..because some women don't have labor pains as bad as others & it's hard to tell if you really are in labor if your water hasn't broken yet..but even if your water hasn't broken yet go to your doc to see if you are dialating! GOOD LUCK

Trust me you will know. You will feel tightening of the cervix. Its not bad at first, but gradually the pain gets worse. When the pain is 5 minutes apart go to the doctor. Or your water could break. I never had that happen the doctor always had to break my water for me and i have had 3 pregnancies. If your not sure if you are in labor go to the hospital anyways. It doestnt hurt to be extra cautious. Good luck! God Bless!

your water breaks and the pain is awful. you feel like your insides are going to come out. but when you see that bundle of joy, you forget the pain. good luck. hope you have an easy time. it first starts out like period cramps and it gets worse from there.

you're water breaks and/or you start having contractions that get stronger, closer together and last longer. I also got sick to my stomach when I went into labor.
