Argh! There are so many good answers!
So far, I like Robert's answer, because I thought that there would be more people than the current estimates. However, Deadguy's analysis was brilliant, and it's hard to argue with. So I leave it up to the everyone to choose the best answer, because I really can't decide.

Bungie recently hit the "4 million unique online players" mark not too long ago.

Some folks have multiple names on there, so I'm not sure what the real numbers are. That also only includes xbox Live players that own the game.
As of November 9, 2005, over seven million units of Halo 2 have been sold worldwide, making it the best selling game for the Xbox.

7 million units worldwide, and that was a year ago. I, myself, know of 3 people that like the game but don't have it (they dont have an xbox). If we use that example as the average, then you're looking at 21 million people that like it. Honestly, the number should be higher though, considering that Halo 2 is still being bought and sold all over the world.
It seems high to just triple that 7 million number, when you think of folks starving in various countries, etc, with no clue what Halo is. Plus, some of the copies listed as "sold" have actually only been sold to stores, not individuals themselves.
If I tripled it, it would suggest that 7 million people each know of 3 people that the other 6,999,999 people don't know. That's ridiculous.
If I know 21 people that like and own it, and only know 3 people that like it and don't have it. Then for each person that likes it, but doesn't own it.. 8 people like it and own it. (8 x 3 = 24)
Therefore, 1 million people divided by 8 owners
(1,000,000 divided by 8)
equals 125,000 people that dont have the game, but like it, per million.
That suggests that for 7 million owners, 875,000 more folks like it but don't have it.
Some stuff is out of our hands here though:
#1 - The 7 million number is a year old
#2 - It includes an undisclosed amount of copies sitting on shelves.
#3 - Some folks bought more than one copy of the game to replace missing or broken copies.
I'm going to assume that it means that the 7 million number is accurate to describe the current amount of folks that own Halo 2 TODAY.
My estimate is that 7,875,000 folks like Halo 2.
This number will grow when Halo 2 hits the PC. It also grows all the time as kids get old enough to start playing Halo 2 for the first time, but then again.. every once in awhile someone plays the game but doesn't like it.

Baist opinion alert :p Halo a million:5 Stars, loved it for the computer, on line became large so were the snap shots Halo 2:4, more effective perfect one participant yet on line wasnt almost as good, in all chance because i didnt have it set up correct on the time and had diverse lag. Halo 3:4 Stars, havnt were given into it good yet, even although its quite good thus far im taking area in COD4 more effective =D So halo for the computer is the winner to me in spite of the indisputable fact that that is going to seem somewhat dated now.

I bought my xbox for Halo1, and bought the special edition of Halo 2 when it came out. My friend came over that night and we hooked the box to our large tv and played straight through.
1. We hated that you HAD to play the convenent storyline.
2. That story line was stupid.
3. I bought the game to tear **** up as the master cheif, not some lame alien nobody cares about.
4. The game just ends. We didn't know what was going on. There wasn't a "to be continued" or anything, so we thought the disk was bad and it wouldn't load the next level. We got pissed when we found out it was done.
5. Too many graphic lag problems. They should've addressed that before they shipped.
Halo 2 = the sucks!

Hard to say, at least you can go with however many copies were sold as a start. That is 7 million right there, so perhaps 14 million+ (as you'll play with a freind)
