5. Were the Populist and pro-silver movements of the 1880s and 1890s essentially backward-looking, genuine prophetic voices raising central critical questions about democracy and economic justice in the new corporate industrial America?

The populist movement is still alive! I don't think they were backward looking, they were progressive. And yes I think they were looking for rebalance of power with corporations and wealthy people in the US.
