Every school has different policies. Usually restrictions on restroom usage are designed for security and crime prevention. Someone else mentions sex, but schools are usually more concerned about things like drug deals and kids getting beat up in restrooms. Limiting the number that can use facilities at a given time also tends to keep trips to the restroom shorter. It means people are using the restroom rather than socializing when they leave the room. Finally, restroom passes give the teacher more control over the flow of students in and out of the classroom. Since the main purpose of being in school is to learn, the teacher rally should have control over what the students are doing.

Hmm...wasn't like that when I was in school but then again, guess a lot has changed. One at a time to cut down on the trouble makers. That part really should be obvious. And I know many convenient stores near schools only allow two students in at a time for the same reason (well that, and to prevent shoplifting).

The primary reason is so the teachers can keep track of the students, know where you are at and about how long it should take you, and send someone to check on you if you're gone for too long.
