I'd say country beach music (is that a genre?)
Wikipedia says his first album "Down To Earth" (1970) was folk rock.
He has done country & western albums too.
Buffett's album, License to Chill, released 2004.
This album, topped the U.S. pop albums chart for the first time in his three-decade career.
So he's a singer of all types as you said.
Lets just call his music "Laid Back"

Late 80's, Early 90's country western style music. A majority of it now by Jimmy Buffett is sunshine and beach music displaying intrest in Mexican and Spanish girls and Caribbean type scenerios. A few of his songs are folk, but like 2 or 3. Moderatly, most of his songs share the attribute of acoustic. Jimmy usually sings all of his duets with a guy named Alan Jackson.

It is call TROP ROCK for tropical rock and roll. Even though it is a combination of country, folk, rae gae, and some rock and a little tad of rap. Love the music and lyrics.
