Periods when pregnant?

Question

For those of you who have had babies or known someone to experience periods during pregnancy....how heavy/painful were they? I am asking because I feel pregnant although my test was negative and I had a fairly heavy and painful period last month, but not as bad as normal. I am not asking this as a replacement for medical advice; I have a doctors' appointment coming up soon but wanted feedback in the meantime. Thanks.

I fell pregnant and miscarried with a very heavy period then fell pregnant again within 2 weeks and had a healthy baby girl.

At the same time my friend was expecting her first child and she bled heavily for the first 3 months, so much so that they thought she was miscarrying. she too, however, had a happy, healthy little girl.

Many women who have spotting in early pregnancy go on to have their baby without any complications, but bleeding can also be a cause for concern. It may be the first sign of a miscarriage; if so, your symptoms would probably go on to include heavy cramping and bleeding that is much heavier than a normal period. If you have sharp pains in your lower abdomen, especially if the pain is only on one side, you should see your doctor straightaway as you could have an ectopic pregnancy.

Because of these potential complications, if you bleed at all early in your pregnancy, it's best to notify your doctor or midwife. She may suggest getting a blood test to check your hormone levels or order an early ultrasound to evaluate your condition more thoroughly.
