because
if you knew, you wouldnt fall asleep
your body has to be relaxed and your mind has to be clean (no thoughts),
so you can fall asleep

When you are feeling sleepy and whilst you are asleep there is a certain part of of your brain that releases a chemical at a steady rate to induce and keep you in unconsciousness. With Narcoleptics (people who fall asleep without warning) the chemical is released at a much faster rate which makes them just drop to the ground and into sleep. I saw a doco on this and the only reason they discovered it was because they were testing lab mice and trying to develop a chemical that could keep you awake for 24 hours. So you don't remember because this chemical renders you unconscious. Sorry can't remember what the name is. Hope this helps.

Ya, you never actually know when you go to sleep isnt that neat?

But sometimes I know when I am getting close because I'll be thinking about something and some weirfd thoughts that I had no control over will come in, and I'll think....I didnt think of that....thats when I know that I a getting close.

That's because you're falling asleep! Your level of consciousness is diminishing. If you knew of it, you would be fully awake. Just accept it and go to sleep!
You can have someone sit quietly next to you when you are dozing and have him alert you of it.
