It create a secure channel so that the other end of th server knows how it is transmission is sometbody it can trust rather than somebody. just PGP key works
that what it does, but in data text i have no clue.

the basic theory is: you use an existing open network, and make it private by using encryption.
a vpn is no trivial thing - set up wrong, there is no private in vpn.
the linux kernel supports virtual private networking out of the box, with no additional software required. if you have two linux boxes you want to join to a private network over the internet, you'd simply have to configure both boxes right. google for ipsec if this is what interests you...
