I'm doing equations GCSE Maths and the tutor makes it even hard to explain the way how equations solved. You any tips??

solve these equations and check your answer...

3x+2=17

Where do you start??

what about this ;- 10F+7=3

How does that work??

The KEY to solving any algebra problem, as I tell my students, is to get your unknown variable all by itself on one side of the equal sign.

You do this by "undoing" everyingthing that's being done to it right now. And you "undo" the easy stuff first, like addition and subtraction, and then the more complicated stuff like multiplication and division.

So if you're adding 3 to X, then you would subtract 3. And remember, what you do to one side of the equal sign, you MUST do to the other, so you would need to subtract 3 from both sides in my example.

Just like this
3x+2=17
3x=15
x=5
-10F+7=3
-10F=-4
F=0.4

There are lots of different parts with different functions in equations...you need to be a little bit more specific. Can you give an example? One of the best things to remember in an equation is to solve the bits inside the brackets first
e.g
3 x (2+2) -2 becomes 3 x 4 - 2

All I can say is I'm glad I'm not one of msoexpert's students. His/her explanation made little sense to me without a fuller explanation of what s/he was talking about.

As for your second example: 10F+7=3, keep your unknown variable to one side of the = sign, and move all the known variables (numbers) to the opposite side of the = sign, remembering that whatever you move to the opposite side of the = sign reverses polarity. That is - (minus) becomes + (plus), and vice versa.

i.e. 10F = 3-7

10F = -4 (minus 4)

Divide each side by 10 (This is so you can work out the value of one single F. i.e. 10F divided by 10 gives 1F or simply F.)

F= -4/10 (minus 4/10 or minus 4 tenths. Decimally, this would be -0.4 (minus nought point four).

To check your answer, substitute F for -0.4. 10 x -0.4 = -4.

Don't forget, you move all the known variables to one side of the equation 3-7 = -4.

In effect, what you're saying is -4 = -4. Whoopieeeee!

3x + 2 = 17
3x = 17 - 2(2 changes to negative cause it jumps over the = sign)
3x = 15
x = 15/3 (divide both sides by 3 to get x on its own)
x = 5
Good luck!

ok... what it really comes down to is a balancing act... what ever you do on one side of the equal (=) sign, you must do on the other...
3x+2=17... first, subtract 2 from both sides...3x+2-2=17-2... gives us 3x=15... then divide both sides by 3...the "3s" on the left cancel out...(3x)/3=15/3... x=5
proof: (3*5)-2=17
