ok, heres what i would do. Make it a custom computer. If you have some computer knowledge, get on tiger direct and buy a barebone computer. If not, have someone custom build it for you. Try a dual 3.06ghz processor. You want 1gig of ram, if you want speed. If its for gaming, throw in a good graph card, either nvidia, or ati, depends on how much money you have to spend. Make sure you get good power supply, prolly 450 watts or better. Get a dvd rw drive, and make sure the motheboard supports lots of usb and various plugs. At list an 80gig harddrive is wanted. Top it all off with a good OS system such as xp pro, and your pretty set to go.

to be honest any good reputable make are as good as each other. more to the point is what you'd like to do with it which decides is the better. if you're wanting to watch movies and play music find one with good graphics and sound etc. multitasking requires lots of ram and a decent processor.
do your groundwork if your thinking of splashing out ok.

Dell but the aftersales service is rubbish.

I would avoid HP, I had one and it used to reboot itself and loose all the files regularly.
