I live in New York City, and work in Times Sqaure. On my way home I always see the promoters for comedy clubs trying to get tourists to buy tickets to the show going on that night. A lot of times they drop names (mainly Dane Cook) in an attempt to sell more tickets. These people generally don't "show up."

Do they ever really perform at these small comedy clubs (not necessarily the ones that sell tickets in Times Sqaure, but in general)? How can I find out where they are perform?

I've found the best comics right here on Q&A. You have to do some digging around, but the funniest people are just your average Joe.

Yes, It was a few years ago. I was at I think it was called the the comedy store, It's where adam sandler, and chris rock got there start. I think it is on the upper east side of manhattan. The night before the MTV movie awards. Chris Rock showed up, and tried out his material he was going to perform the next night.

Can't speak for NYC, but when I was stationed in San Antonio Nick DePaolo came to town and played in a small venue connected to Rivercenter Mall (and yes, he made a joke about it -- this was around the time he was becoming a regular sight on Comedy Central and he talked about how far he had come).
