My mom called it supervision. Between her bell collection, the Christmas tree (which was decorated top to bottom, all 360 degrees), and anything else within 3 feet of the floor, she never put anything away, she just taught me "no".

Not from a 10 month old. Assume the worse. If your baby respects baby gates usually, the answer about that above is what I would do. But, if your baby is anything like mine were (very physically capable) you might consider a tree on a table out of reach. Also, there's a chance your baby won't bother it at all. Some don't because it's so pretty. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Some people put the tree up on a table.
Some put a baby fence/gate around the tree.
When our first was a baby, my hubby ran a wire from the top of the tree up to a ceiling vent to keep it from being tipped over.
We didn't take any special precatutions with our other two kids...just kept an eye on them and told them not to touch.
If there are ornaments that you would be DEVASTATED if they got broken, either don't use them this year or put them up very high and attach them securely to the branches. Put things that aren't fragile down low because baby will be very tempted to touch them. Our rule was usually that you had to have an adult to help you if you wanted to look at ornaments.

I had the same problem when my son was small. The only thing that helped was to tie some string or strong cotton to the very top of the tree and tie the other end to a nail in the wall just above the tree. Your baby may take off some of the ornaments but the tree will definately not fall on top of them which is what i was worried about.

It is extremely hard to keep a baby away from something so beautiful, and who wants to be yelling NO at the kid all day. That would make for a horrible holiday season. There is no foolproof way butsome ideas that I have used are:
-You can secure the tree by wrapping a rope or strap around the middle of the trunk and firmly secure it to the wall-this will keep the tree from dumping on the floor, and in addition, put safe, plastic ornaments where the baby can reach so when he does pull them off(which he will)it will be safe.
-A friend of mine used to use a playpen(they old square kind, not the playyards we have today) and put the tree right in it.
-child gates can be put around it,but those ones are very expensive
-last year I had to put it up Christmas Eve and take it down Christmas day. :( My twins were 2 and there would have been no stopping them.

When our son was small, we protected the tree by putting it in the portable play-yard for safety. Worked well...he couldn't reach it. We still put the fragile ornaments up high, and soft things on the bottom, just in case....
We also spread his gift-opening over several days. He really loved playing with the bows and crumpling up the wrapping paper, sitting in the boxes, etc. as much as he enjoyed the gifts, so we gave him plenty of time to play with them. Whatever you decide to do, take LOTS of pictures!
Have a wonderful holiday with your baby! :-)

Something like a baby corral which gives ample room for the baby to play, but limits their roaming about the house getting into dangerous things. They are usually made of wood and expands like a rack into a large enclosure. A ten month old baby should not be allowed to roam the house freely, and a mother cannot be expected to be inconstant supervision.

Get a play pen and place a table in it - secured - and put the tree on top of the table, decorate the outside of the play pen as well as the tree and this will allow the wee one to enjoy their first Christmas.

Enjoy

i have the same problem this year with my very active 7 month old son! He is crawling around and standing up holding on to to furniture and he is very fast. He wants everything hes not allowed to have!

We are going to stand our tree on a table or even large carboard box and put it behind the sofa. (Our sofa is on an angle)

Have a Happy Christmas!!!!!

I have used a 4 ft tree on a table top that my baby could not reach. It worked fine for us.

A friend of mine bought a small picket fence from Home Depot and painted it x-mas colours. He screwed angle braces to the back and erected it around the tree. It looked great after decorating it.
