They best type of swimming is constant motion. You have to get you heart rate and keep it up to burn fat. Do whatever is your best stroke for at least 20 minutes to start burning fat. Aqua aerobics are wonderful also. As far as toning. Breast stroke is a great workout it target a lot of muscle groups. More than freestyle and backstroke and its a lot easier than butterfly. Breast stroke is an easy stroke to learn, (not easy to master) but once learned you can keep it up for a while.

All forms of swimming are great for toning. But personally I find freestyle and butterfly to be the ones who do the most to tone and the butt, thighs, and abs. But for abs to develop really well I would also recommend doing sit ups regularly.

Breaststroke is a nice and gentle full body workout. Best of all, however, is aqua aerobics - twice a week for six weeks and you should see a huge difference in body shape and toning.
Also, because your weight is supported in the water, aqua aerobics doesn't have the same adverse effects of high impact aerobics yet has all of the benefits.
Enjoy!

swimming in itself is a good exercise which helps to bulid upthe mentioned parts of the body but if u really wanna develope a well toned body then go on for some abs excercises as well......freestyle is a good way to exercise but if u really want to test ur endurense limits then go for butterfly n the breast stroke.......

an article i read recently said the following:
Running all-out in waist deep water is one of the most intense froms of exercise; doing short sprints, a 65kg woman can burn an estimated 70kJ per minute - as much as running 5 km race on land.
In terms of strokes. breast stroke burns the most calories.
good luck :-)

very interesting question
Actually ....if u are looking at getting better muscles and stuff it doesnt matter which style u use doesnt matter but what matter is HOW MUCH you do consistantly EVERYDAY (or consistantly)
the butterfly stroke is toughest and gives the most number of body parts excersice but the Freestly and backstroke done consistantly everyday well will do your job
