Perfume is a combination of natural and synthetic compounds which are aromatic compounds and fixatives. They are mixed with alcohol and water in different strengths.

There are different strengths of perfume concentrates which are sold.

Eau de toilette contains about 5% - 15% perfume concentrates. It is light, and usually does not last very long.

Eau de parfum (perfume) contains about 15% - 25% perfume concentrates. It is therefore stronger and lasts longer

Some (but not all) perfume houses will sell Perfume Extract (or Perfume) which can contains up to about 40% perfume concentrates. Some of the ones who do are Chanel and Coty. Be careful how much, or how little you put on.

Many houses slightly alter the aromatic formulation of the perfume if it is an EDP or an EDT.

Perfumery is an extremely complex art and science. A fascinating read if you like perfume is Chandler Burr's "The Emperor of Scent: A Story of Perfume, Obsession, and the Last Mystery of the Senses."

Eau De Toilette is the weakest version you can buy. Eau De Paerfume is the next up. Perfume is the strongest/most concentrated of the same scent.

Long ago, when men shaved and ladies put on makeup and did their hair, the table they used was called a "toilette". They would say that they were "making their toilette", which means they were cleaning up a tad. Eau means scent. "Eau de fleur" means scent of flowers. Therefore, "eau de toilette" means the fragrance that is on your dressing table. It's all in the translation.
