We throw 50,000 tonnes of dead cod back because it comes up with other fish - then wonder why we haven't enough to eat. Ross Finnie is one of the biggest idiots alive on the planet today - he's given away our fishing industry. Brussels and their stupid regulations should be kicked into touch.

i think youll find OUR fishermen dont rape and plunder, the govt set stringent quotas..and god help you if you exceed them as the man from the ministry will have you boat beached faster than you can blink...
look to the foreign fishermen, like spanish and french... our coastal water are protected by maritime law..the EU recinded these protections, and allowed any foreign johnny to fish OUR territorial water with impunity.
you want to shout, go scream at politicians in brussels, you want to do something, boycott foreign fish imports..tesco asda and whoever else dont care where it come from... they just want to sell it. to you... the punter.
british fishermen are as old as the hills that stick up out of teh seabed.. its their livelihood... they dont overfish stocks, they know all about depletions and scarcity... foreign johnny doesnt give a flying fish... he just want fish in his hold, and doesnt give a damn if it all runs out...
its management issues at the end of the day, and the navy should defend our waters. we went to war with iceland in the 1980s over exactly this issue... theyre our fish, in our territorial waters..sling yer hook.

because the legal status of the open sea, is yet unclear... it belongs to everybody
the IMO (international maritime organization) and the OPA 94' conference, did nothing to clarify to whom the open sea and it's products belong to...
so, up to now, anybody can take advantage of the open sea and it's ressources... however, coastal states want to extend their limits up to 200 N. miles.. this may solve the problem, but it will create newer political crisis...
so, i think that it will never end...
