Wouldn't the World Cup / World Championships be more exciting and more unpredictable if the one country that is always odds-on favourite to win and that has more top pro's to choose from than any others were split up into into constitutent states/provinces (a bit like the Soviet Union & Yugoslavia but only for the purpose of this one sport's World Championships) ?

I sort of agree. Especially during the Olympics. The USA is so much bigger than (moire populated and better ) than all other countries, why don't they compete under specific states?
