and why does the recieved packets 0 number sometimes move upto 28 or so when the connectivity is not there. What can I do about the situation please?

Have tried right clicking & repair but no joy. I have usb adapter in laptop, wireless access point & broadband running through.

well, that's an easy thing
start-run
type CMD and hit enter
then type
ipconfig / release
ipconfig / renew
but before that, make sure that you set your IP settings to DHCP
from control panel- connections - wireless connection
right click, properties, internet protocol TCP/IP
double click it
chose Obtain.... in both options

that actually an issue with the Xp service pack 2..do this : click on starts >> control panel >> network connections >> right click on wireless network connection icon >> on the General tab , uncheck the box at the bottom that says : "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity " >> click OK .. get out of that window..thats will fix the problem...that usuall comes back if you download something new in the pc or make some changes with the settings...

Usually the Access Point has not assigned a network address so will not give full access. Just right click on icon and click repair.

Could be the wireless router has encryption set so you would have to setup your pc wireless card to match it.
