Elections are always held on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. However, government-agencies, the courts and many companies close today to give people the chance to vote. Of companies that don't, some give partial days or allow you a little flex time.
Granted the polls are open all day varying on the state, so you can vote before or after work too.

Yes, and that is because no one would show up on the weekends!
And elections are always not held on a date!
"Election Day occurs on the Tuesday following the first Monday of November every year, which is always the Tuesday between November 2 and November 8, inclusively. The next Election Day will fall on November 7, 2006."

The polls are open for a minimum of 12 hours on election day.
Those who can't make it during those times have the option of voting an absentee ballot.
There is no reason why a person who wants to vote can't vote.
