my first computer was a gateway and it ran great for 7 years. My latest is a 3 year old Dell. The Dell runs good too! I'm not sure which of the two to buy as my next computer. I will probably buy one of the two next year. Any recommendations?

If you're asking between Dell and Gateway... absolutely Dell.
If you're asking about any other brand well... off course you're not an amateur, with two computers and 10 years owning you already know a lot, but before buy any new one is good to do a little bit of research. Read some magazines (be it on-line or paper ones) and get to familiarize not with what is now but with "what-would-be" so you make a better choice for the years to come. There'll be a great turn-arround in computer software in the next years so try to buy for that changes.

dell has become so propriatary that its not funny the last company that made their cases backwards so only their parts would fit went out of buisness in a year and gateway just dosnt have the quality i wouldnt buy either
