Let me just start by saying that Blondie did Not "start" rap. That song was *one* of the 1st to make it to mainstream *radio*, but certainly Not the 1st rap song....

For it's true origins, you'd have to go back to NYC in the early 70s. Either The Bronx or Queens (this is often debated) . Local block parties were often held & kids would step up to mics & freestyle rap. Both the vocal style & the way the music was prodiuced evolved from there.

By 1979 (a good 2 to 3 YEARS before "Rapture"), The Sugar Hill Gang hit it big w/ "Rapper's Delight". THIS is where most say rap was officially on the map.

You'll likely get a much more detailed history of hip hop/rap with books available or possibly Wikipedia.

I'm done.

I guess one could say it originated in Africa, as it has been around a long time. I remember hearing it in the 50's but it wasn't called Rap back then. If you think about it, it is just simple words attached to a beat, and we all know that most beats came from Africa. If you ever watched any of the old Tarzan movies, you hear the same beats, and these movies were made in the 30's probably. I remember seeing it performed way back in the late 50's but it was with more dance than lyrics, but did have the same style of lyrics as the rap of today. I'm 55 years old and I have watched it since I can remember, and have enjoyed it all my life. It just got real popular in the early 80's, and was done mainly without the dance. I wish I could remember what they called the dance, as you could talk to any old timers, and they would say "yeah I remember that stuff". I hope I have been of some help to you. Good Luck!!!

Rap started in the late 70's in New York, with some of the most prominent artists being the Sugarhill Gang, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, but didn't really gain any airtime until the mid 80's when Run DMC worked with Aerosmith on "Walk This Way". It exploded onto the national scene after that.
