It is very difficult making a choice, because there are so many symphonies that could go in that position. Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony is a favourite - the only problem is that despite its name, like most of the choices above it's not actually a symphony! I love Honegger's Second Symphony for Strings. Of course, Beethoven's Fifth (the ta-ta-ta dum one above). Nielsen, Symphonia Espansiva (the 3rd). Charles Ives' Third. Mahler's Sixth and Ninth. I could go on forever, so I'd better shut up. :)

Some of these answers so far are not symphonies. A symphony is generally a work for large orchestra with four movements. Vivaldi's Four Seasons is not a symphony. Neither is the Danse Macabre, although they are both great works.

My favorite symphony is Mahler's Eighth. Running behind it would be Dvorak's Ninth.

Ludwig van Beethoven, Symphony No.9 - the 'Choral'

I'm very fond of symphonic music, and there is a danger that you hear some pieces so often that they cease to have the impact they once had. But this has never been the case with this, especially the choral section itself! Schiller's 'Ode to Joy' is simply magical in this setting, Often music is powerful simply by virtue of volume or speed or mood. But this simply all fits together so well thsat it is emotionally explosive!

Luv factor is must be referring to Beethoven's 5th. For a VERY LONG TIME I would have agreed with her. Now however:

I love the Dance Macabre from Saint Saens (Does that qualify as a symphony), otherwise Beethoven's 9th.
