Ordinary vinegar works great, and is CHEAP.
Depending on the type of showerhead, the bag tied over the end method may not work, but sure sounds like a great idea!
If you take off your showerhead to soak it in ANYTHING, make sure you have some teflon tape handy to put on the threads before you screw it back on. It's available in the plumbing section of any hardware store, and helps prevent leaking.
Hope this helps!

Vinegar is the best way. Don't waste your money on a bunch of cleaning products that may not work.
Vinegar is cheap and can be used on the shower head, your faucet, in your dishwaher and automatic coffee maker!
It's a great tool!

There is a product called CFR that removes the lime build up. Or, you can use vinegar. The acid in the vinegar eats the build up.

Either spray it or soak it in "Lime Away." Spraying usually does the trick, but if you want to soak it, either detach it and soak it or tie a baggie to it and soak for an hour or so.
