Laptops are very difficult to fix if you don't know what you're doing. You could try entering your laptop's make and model into a search engine, but it is likely that you won't find many good repair instructions.
Your best bet is to contact the company that sold you your laptop (especially if it's still under a guarantee or insurance) or a computer repair company.
The smoke could be caused by plastic that has overheated and is now burning, but this is only a guess. I would strongly advise that you don't use the laptop if you continue to see smoke!

It sounds like you have a fried motherboard, or CPU, or power supply. It is difficult and expensive to get a laptop repaired. I would find somewhere that will diagnose it fo you before deciding what to do with it.
You can always remove the hard drive and place it into a PC if needs be, this will allow data removal. Finding a cable that will allow you to do so willl be a little tough though, but they DO exist. I have one!

Sadly, I think it is fried. Said of a Prat of a repair person when my old one took a cooking (All I could have done was dip it in batter first and prepare chips to go with it).... "They must run on smoke, as soon as the smoke comes out then never run again."
Well. looking back it was funny, but I was in no mood what so ever at that mo'

Dont worry your laptop is fine. The presence of smoke merely indicates that is angry. You should immerse it in water for 30 - 40 minutes then pop him straight in the freezer. Leave for a day and it should be fine.

power supply inside the laptop. If its under warranty you can get it fixed. If its not, find out if any of your friends know how to change it (its tricky). If mine did that I'd buy a fresh!!
