Talking on a phone while driving is not advisable! Even hands free can cause distractions. Here's my explanation:

When you are talking to someone via phone while driving you are not fully focusing on the road, you are simply driving by 'habit'.

Hypothetical event-->As you are approaching an intersection and you want to turn are you aware that a pedestrian might be crossing or possibly traffic is stopped in the direction of turn? Probably not. All your mind is 'thinking' is I AM TURNING THE CAR. You may not realise this- as your mind is occupied on what either you are talking about or the person on the other end is saying. You are not fully focused on driving you are merely driving by your sub conscious thought of driving.

Simply put: your brain is in thought and driving a car requires alot of thinking. Where am I going? What's the speed limit? Is this car turning ahead of me? Is the light red, green, or yellow? Is that a person crossing the street up ahead? There's a stop sign-got to stop. Did I just see a cop?! Was I speeding? Where and when do I turn to get into the mall parking area? etc., etc., etc..

You cannot possibly hold a phone conversation and drive at the same time. Too many things for your brain to process at once.

Have you ever been driving along and after a few miles you think, "How did I get here? I don't remember driving past the shopping center/gas station/bank/post office?!" It's kind of like that.

Have you ever been driving on a freeway and you notice a car ahead driving 10-15 mph slower than the speed limit? Chances are they're on a phone not aware of the speed they are moving! Like I mentioned, they are not thinking about driving, they're just driving out of habit.

There is no need to talk on a phone while driving. period. Turn on the radio if you must have company. Listening to the radio requires no concentrated thinking on your part therefore a safer alternative to boredom.

Hang Up And Drive!

As Long As You Are Using A Bluetooth Headset, And both your hands are on the steering wheel, its pretty much safe.

If You Think You Are Going To Start A Heated Discussion/Argument WithThe Person On The Other End On The Phone, I Would Advice You To Park The Car On The Side And Continue Your Discussion, If Possible Try To Avoid It Completly. But DO NOT DRIVE, When Upset.

I am on a committee called Westgate Community Road Safety Council here in Australia and our State has banned talking on mobile Phones while driving in fact a driver can be fined for doing this I am trying to get the Government to make and sign post areas on highways where a person driving can stop and legally use their mobile phone. We have had lots of accidents that can be blamed on driving while using a phone.

well, from my point of view, using handphone while driving is dangerous because no matter what whether you using ear piece or blur tooth set, you will get distracted by the calls and messages from the call, may be you will think my both hands on the steering and my legs are at the break but however if your conversation went on to some serious stuff you will lose concentration on driving which may end up with an accident or may be it will cost your life.

Every single person who has answered you, I gave them a thumbs up because I agreed with everybody! I have almost had several accidents because I was trying to find my cell-phone in my purse, and couldn't. One time I dropped it under the seat, and I tried to retrieve it, but it almost caused a domino effect on the interstate. I learned my lesson and I don't turn it on and use it unless I have car trouble, or some emergency.

I agree that using a mobile phone while driving can be dangerous, because I have to stick the beer between my legs if I pick up the phone, and if I'm on a rough road I could actually lose some of the beer!
