This is a very interesting subject you proposed.

I will explain the mechanism of this somewhat surprising human reaction, through a social psychology concept developed by Julian Rotter, called "Locus of control".

Basically, locus of control is a concept that refers to the way people perceive their experiences in life. To be more specific, people with an internal locus of control, will put their actions, achievements or failures on the account of their own capacities. For example, you will fail an exam because you didn't learn enough. Externalists (people with an external locus of control) will blame their mistakes or failures on the environment, the teacher, the questions, the bus etc.

"Blaming" someone or something else for what you do wrong, or simply putting it on the account of "act of god" or, beneath our control, is also a defense mechanism used by every possible individual.

If we were to blame ourselves for every mistake, failure, and wrong in our lives, we would all be very depressed and mentally ill (and this is the case for - unfortunately - a lot of people). Therefore, sometimes we'll blame the teacher for asking too difficult questions, the bus driver for not being on time, or the traffic for being late.

Our achievements, even if moderated by other factors or people, we tend to take credit for, because this reaction is an important boost for our self esteem.

Thats because others who are listening to him should not get carried away that only luck can help them achieve things which would be a great loss to the world!! A person is said to be successful only if he is able to make others involve in his work apart from his achievements in the field!! While on the other hand if he fails he says its because of luck because others who worked with him shouldn't get blamed for being wrong somewhere at some part of the time!! Just think abt this situation and u'll find the right answer :)

How true.

I suppose that people don't want to admit that they failed exams because they didn't work hard enough, whereas when they pass they want the credit for it....why pass it off as luck when you can say you worked hard to acheive it.

It is psycological. We don't like to admit to failure yet we are all too ready to take credit for success.

That is a wrong notion. He should be able to be man enough to accept any consequence - good or bad- of his actions.

You need to explain further or let it go.
