In plumbing, when using compression joints I've always been told that copper olives are best as they provide a better seal. But nearly all plumbing stores only sell brass olives. What is best?

Yes you are dead right copper olives are best for the job as they are softer and make a better seal inside the joint. plumb shops sell what is more profitable for them you should always insist on the ones you want. Don't forget your PTFE tape as well it could make all the differance.

Copper Olives

A brass compression ring gives a much longer lasting joint which is less liable to be damaged by the pipework being stressed. Copper rings are too soft and if a pipe is knocked distort easier and allow leaks.

Nester Q - when did you last see copper rust? Interesting that.

I try and stay away from any compression joints unless it's the final fitting. Then copper w/compression ring. Copper with soldered joints is preferred throughout all fittings.

The reason that stores sell almost only brass is because it doesn't rust as easliy as copper. I would buy the brass but you can use some plumbing putty to make a nice tight seal.

Copper is best as it is more malleable, but brass olives are cheaper and quicker to produce and they are a 'cleaner' unit than copper and wont mark or scratch so easy.

Brass is Best! Copper tends to corrode more easily after time. It holds up longer but is not as easy to install as brass is. But that's my opinion!

Copper requires less tightening force to make a seal as it deforms easily.
