I already do that Ginger, I never let other peoples moods get to me, even if I'm having a bit of an off day myself I still smile and don't take my moods out on others, I smile at everyone I meet, some find it odd but for the most part most find it nice, there are a lot of lonely people out there who appreciate a smile from a stranger, it makes their day and its an ice breaker too, it costs nothing to be nice or to smile.

Great question Ginger! It's nice to be nice. Being nice to someone makes us feel good about ourselves while making someone feel good too! I smile at people because that's me! Some smile back who wouldn't otherwise smile, others just look at me as though i'm crazy. But it's good! Also to have a kind word to say to someone else is so much better than only ever speak to critcize. I feel on answers we should have something like smile of the week! Not best answer or so many points for it but for making someone smile! And you know ... When you try to be nice, enjoy the feel goof factor that results then it makes you want to try and be nice again and again! So let's all do it hey!

I'll try my best! I do ever day because I have to answer the phone at work and deal a lot with the public. The British public have to be the rudest in the world! I do however enjoy being extremely nice to people who are just downright rude, it helps me get through the day! However I do sometimes wish I could just tell the rude people to F**k off!

This is one of the oldest political fallacies that exists - "If you are nice, they will be nice back."
I will admit, this does work very often.
Yet, there are times when people will be rude or mean back to you regardless of your demeanor.
If I am starving, I want food more than I want to be nice to you.
If I am in pain, I want peace more than I want to be nice to you.
If I am sick, I want health more than I want to be nice to you.
There are people who can have some sort of affliction and still be nice, but being nice runs short when an ill lasts long enough.
And though you don't say it (I know you are thinking it), your enemies will often remain your enemies even if you are nice. People were given memory. Memory lets one remember both good and bad in the past. Whether or not you are nice now, that does not mean someone may not remember a time when you were not nice.

you think like me ! see my nickname : spreading smiles ! thats what we all should do
ever tried smiling at the grumpy kid on the bus in the morning - he will always return that smile !
but then there are idiots... i gave a subtle little smile to this woman on the tube this morning and she actually grunted at me as if i was sticking 2 fingers to her ! seriously !
its true, theres no harm in being nice and i feel happier...
but think about this - if everyone was nice, then maybe we wouldnt appreciate 'niceness' anymore... its only coz some gits are horrible to everyone they see, that we like people who atleast make an effort to be nice

I'll try, but odds on I'll be 'Mr Smarmy' by 4 o'clock...
Some people need a bit of conflict to get them going unfortunately.
However, a very nice thought, we need more people like you...

It is caused by our ego - we think too highly ourselves and said, "Huh! Who is he that I should smile at him?" By smiling at someone, we are afraid that they would think that we "surrender" to them and believe me, it is extremely difficult to smile at someone whom you despise.
Moreover, if you smile to everyone, including those you do not know, they might think you have a hidden motives, or worse, they might think you are suffering from mental illness. So it is a very difficult thing to do. A paradox I would say.
