I think it was the 6th season, just before Dark Willow surfaced and tried to demolish the Trio, Buffy, the Scoobies and the world.
This event prompted Spike to seek out his soul, which was harboured in the Underworld, through three deadly trial stages.

It's the fourth-last episode of Season 6.
But its really sad. Won't spoit it for you though.
