Vaginal smears are stained and looked at under a microscope to see the amount of lactobacillus. Nugent score measures this. One of the signs of bacterial vaginosis is a reduction or absence of lactobacilli. Lactobacilli are the "good" germs that help keep our digestive and reproductive systems healthy. That's why yogurt makes such a big deal about "live and active cultures" in their product. If the normal vaginal flora is out of whack, bad bacteria is present.

Either you are some sort of computer geek and felt I needed a quiz ; ) or you heard a doc throw out this term in relation to a vaginal infection. Next time ask the doc exactly what they are talking about, and if this was a quiz...it's 2 am leave me the heck alone ; )
