The email actually does not go from Ireland to Japan. The email which you send goes to your email server, which then takes care of sending it to the email server of the recipient.
So, if both of you are using yahoo mail, it wouldn't take more than a few seconds. but if both of you are using a different mail servers, for example like a university mail server, then it might take a lot of time depending on the policy of your mail server. some mail servers deliver mails every few minutes instead of as and when they receive it.

Email is very quick once you click the send button its gone and will arrive at your destination within a minute or two.

I have often sent an email to New Zealand that they have recieved quicker than I have had the confirmation of sending it.
(I have been on the phone to them as it was sent)
