There is a book you can buy that was made buy a bored millionare who would pull apart his car VW and put it back together and found better ways to fix and build things, described in lay mans words. I think it is called haynes?
Other wise VW are pretty basic, But they don't have a starter moter, they a generater which starts the moter.
