I don't know why all these idiots are talking about 6500-8500 RPM when you're talking about a '75 454. That's completely ridiculous to even mention in this discussion. This isn't Nascar.
If it was brand new, I wouldn't go past 5,000, and probably wouldn't go past 4,000 if I planned on not tearing it up eventually.
Keep in mind that the valvetrain is one of the most stressed parts of an old engine, and the valve springs have likely lost some tension over the years, so why risk "sucking a valve" and tearing it all up?
With the type of low-po cams they had to use back then, spinning it past 4500 would most likely LOSE POWER because the cylinders can't fill (with air) fast enough to keep up with that kind of RPM.

If you are asking what the highest RPM you can turn a stock 454, it really depends on what components it was built with. A standard, low performance 454 will redline at about 5500RPM, a tall deck truck engine will fly apart much above 4500, but a high perf factory engine will take about 6000 or so with no problem. So the answer is, it depends.
A well built high performance big block will take 7500 RPM or greater with ease, but don't try that with Mr Good Wrench.

on a similar time as 20" rims are the bomb these days on a classic automobile like that i does no longer replace rim length nor could i regulate rims. Years in the past the concern to do in case you had a automobile like that grew to become into to place Cragar S/S rims with huge 60 sequence tires interior the rear and 70 sequence interior the front. these days a miles greater uncomplicated and cost holding option is to maintain the tire length closer collectively and replace the sides with the producing facility mags. The paint is probable unique and that i could bypass returned with the Chevrolet Orange. If the automobile is a real S/S it ought to have incorporate a 350cu. it ought to have the S/S logos no longer purely on the quarter panels yet in addition on the grill. the only differences i could even evaluate and that must be given which you weren't making plans to coach it may be to have the interior redone in a black tuck and pleat. That'd be a candy experience. The Chevelle grew to become right into a miles greater uncomplicated version of the Chevy muscle automobile and interior the S/S version often got here with a 396cu that ought to truly take the 350 Nova.

There is no such thing as a rev limiter on an engine that old, at least not a chevy. It will go from zero to as fast as it can, and then blow up pretty much. I've heard of people setting bricks on the gas and walking away and not being able to blow them up too though, so who knows. Anyway, even one in a pickup should be able to turn 5500 pretty easily, although it will have no power up at that level with the type of cams that come in them.

I think what you're asking about is a speed govenor. If so - it's a special carburator that severely limits the amount of air and fuel going into the engine after the engine reaches a certain r.p.m.(2500r.p.m. ?). This in turn restricts the top speed of the vehicle to about 55m.p.h.?.

I'd set the rev limiter at 5500 to 6000 for a healthy stock engine.

with my 350, it shifts at around 4200 WOT.. i have no clue what the redline is..but 5500 sounds a little high for a big block..also, a dump truck with a 366 i believe taps out around 4500?.. somewhere close to that
