I used refill ink from IMS to refill the cartridge in my (6 months old) HP 4215 all-in-one printer. After the 3rd refill the printer stopped working.

Have used HP printers for over 20 years - never had a problem.

Found a reference that HP printers store the identification number (a serial number) from the cartridge. And that it tracks the last 3 cartridges used by the machine.

Can find nothing wrong with the printer.

Considering how HP "acquired" the phone records of their Board members, have to wonder - will the machine "shut down" if it detects you are not using new HP cartridges?

Friends have used the IMS ink to refill their printers - not by HP - several times without any problems.

Maybe the ink has caused the problem or its meant to happen. You should have read the manual carefully regarding refilling the cartridge or it was not designed to be refilled. Your friends may not have problems because they different models. Different models have different settings and requirements almost. Or maybe the cartrtidge is damaged. Clean the part where you can see a electronic device exposed. That's where the printer can detect if a cartridge is full or not, or nothing is present.

Only some cartridges can be refilled. Most have smart chips that prevent reuse of the cartridge even if it is refilled. If you are lucky to have a refillable one just pick up a ink refill kit from the store. The kits have a small hand drill so you can inject the new ink. Be sure to read and follow all directions because the ink could mix inside and be a strange color when you print. There should be no need to wait after refilling it before you put it in the printer. Good Luck!!!
