if your american and you lose your wallet and/or passport you should usually report to the embassy and there they can help you. They give information on what to do, how to get money wired to you etc. That is for a foreign country as for far from home, if you mean like losing your wallet in a different part of the country, your best bet is to report it to the police and try calling family and seeing if they can help you at all.

Been very far from home but never lost wallet. When I was mugged/carjacked I was in my own city and the police were quite helpful.

Once locked my keys in my car in Eureka, Cali, but a nice guy on a lunch break who worked at an auto place opened my door, didn't even charge me. Just smiled and said "have a nice day"

Unfortunately this has happened to me and it was terrible. I was a senior in high school and on my graduation trip to Europe and fortunately I was with several friends who were able to cover me until money was sent from my mom but I don't know what would have happened if they weren't there.
