The two death sentences are mainly a hedge against a successful appeal of one of them. It makes it a little less likely that for him "no noose will be good news."

well obviously you cant kill a man twice, so they do the first sentence, hanging, then dont follow through with the second one. its exactly like if a man is convicted to 200 some odd years in prison, its just to make a statement not actually to follow through with
