Depends on the amount of television. A little bit can go a long ways. If children are ignoring their school work for television, or solely watching programs with no educational value whatsoever, then yes.

Television can also act as a great tool if you can get them to watch things like the discovery channel, learning channel, etc..

Yes. Especially if the child watches too much tv. If the child watches too much television, he might get bored in class because television has images that move very fast and children get excited by it while in school, teachers are usually 'slow' and are not like the television who can speed things up so the child could easily get bored in school and not listen to the teacher.

It depends the number of hours that a child spend watching television. If the child spends time watching tv at the expense of his or her work, this will definitely affect the child in school.

The type of programme that the child watches is also a factor which has be to be considered. If the child is watching educational tv programs for about 1 hr and usual cartoon program for another 0.5 hr per day, then it should be ok because the child is learning and relaxing at the same time.

But it is advisable to select tv programs too with your child, to know what his or her interests are. Because there are some programs which are really violent so parents have to be aware what their children are watching. Violent tv programs may cause children to imitate the actions in school causing disciplinary problems.

And too much tv will sometimes cause children to develop the bad habit of not thinking deep enough. When children sit in front of the tv, they get information straight from the program that goes on and on, like spoonfeeding. I have seen children who watch too much tv programs and when you ask them questions on their work, they are not willing to think deep enough and expect you to give them the answers because this is what the tv does for them!

Of course, there is balance in everything. TV itself is not bad. It depends on how we utilise to help our children in their learning and development. So if we utilise it well, children will definitely benefit from it, be it for educational or entertainment purposes.

yes absolutely
a couple years ago i volunteered at a day care and there was this adorable little three year old, but she was like a zombie i never heard her say more than yes or no.she didn't play with the other children, she would basically just sit around. I then came to find out that her mother would sit her in front of the television all day long so she wouldn't be bothered while working from home.

very possibly and may be detrimental

watching TV is much more fun than doing homework
or studying for tests -

and TV does prove that you can solve any problem in 30 minutes
- the hard ones in an hour, including commercial breaks

There is more than the homework time. The child needs spare time to feel curiosity and involve in creative and social activities. If he/she is allowed to spend all spare time in front of the tv, the child won't want to spend time for activities that will benefit him/her. I also observed that his/her reactions get more violent if he/she is allowed to spend too much time in front of the tv.
