My parents had six, I had two, my youngest daughter has three, and my oldest has none.
This is a subject I've spoken on frequently with social scientists attending conferences here.
In Europe, where the majority of women are middle income, every country has been in negative population growth for the last ten years. This year, France finally had an increase, but they don't think it will last. In the U.S., middle and upper income have been in negative growth for the same period. Only low income and immigrates have kept the numbers up. I guess the abortion rights for low income women is not working to control the numbers of children born in poverty.
Add to this, the birth rate for male children has dropped by 25% in the last 30 years, to where is is now about equal to that of girls. With the much higher rate of death for males, even before they mature, this is creating an imbalance in available blue collar jobs only done by males. There are severe shortages in all areas of blue collar fields, though the leaders in the movement to help those living in poverty seem to think they are too good for this work. These jobs start at $60,000 a year.
Some social scientist told me that in 10-20 years, either men working white collar jobs will have to be forced to work the blue collar jobs, or women will have to be forced into the fields, perhaps starting with those in prison. Want to guess which will be forced to do the jobs?
