The whole modern world once treated homosexuality as a mental disease. (Few traditional societies never had a problem with it, e.g. some Native american Tribes)

What is however interesting is to note that all the countries with a well developed health system have now realised that homosexuality is NOT a mental disease. (Hopefully this enlightenement will spread to all).

Because many people have always thought of homosexuality as going against nature. You could say that animals do it. I would have to say you are right. Still only a tiny percentage do it. In Canada homosexuality was considered a mental disease 15 years ago. Homosexuality is not considered to be a mental disease by medical professionals anymore because somebody might get sued. Homosexuality has been forced to be recognized in society because of Human Rights. Homosexuality is still not normal though. Homosexuality also goes against the Chinese religion. Most of China is Buddist. In nature and in Physics opposites attract.

It was treated as a mental disease not only in China but in America as well. Homosexuals were condemned to electro-shock therapy and indefinate unlawful imprisonment, simply because the society deemed their behavior as deviant.

The great playwright Oscar Wilde was imprisoned for his homosexuality, being released penniless and dying three years later. Many more injustices have been recorded throughout history in all countries.

You need only follow the news to find reports of homosexuals being murdered in the Middle East.

To address your question, though, I think you will find that "mental illness" really defines that which is not condoned by society. The definition of mental illness is when a person drops the mask demanded by the society. This could take the form of exposing oneself in public or engaging in "deviant" acts. The entire process is completely relative and completely subject to the whims of society.

Mental hospitals are simply weigh stations for those we cannot legally imprison. Psychiatry identifies the "criminal mind" without consideration of criminal acts or intent as codified by the legislature.

Because you don't get everything right the first try. There was a time that STD's were thought to be cured by sleeping with a virgin, that did not pan out either.

was it?...I never have heard of that...homosexuals I believe were quite prominent in the royal system...but in current Chinese governmental policies...homosexuality isn't illegal because 'it doesn't exist'.

And china has no religion..other that some buddhism and dao belief which are not religion..so it isn't religiously immoral either.

Because the chinese doesn't want to acknowledge homosexualism. Anything that cannot be solved will be throw into the mental disease file, easier for them to close eyes.
