-learn about computer-adaptive exams; familiarity with the format of the test will help ease test-day anxiety and allow you to perform at your best
-review algebra, geometry, and basic probability; practicing some of the basic concepts you haven't seen in years will reduce your frustration and raise your score
-review basic rules of grammar; sentence correction questions will depend largely on very few fundamental rules
-read good publications; ability to quickly get through dense material is vital for the GMAT
-above all, pracitce dealing with questions on the computer; the inability to skip, review, preview, underline, cross out, and generally write on the test material itself is very disconcerting to many test-takers. Consider investing in a test-preparation program that will allow you to practice taking the GMAT online and help you with content review.
If there is a Kaplan center near you, attend a free "Test day strategies" seminar to pick up a few quick tips.
Good luck!

Preparing for the GMAT will improve your score.
Firstly it will mean that you are familiar with the format of the test questions and timing. Secondly study will give you a chance to revise all those areas of math where you are a little rusty. Thirdly you will learn plenty of tips and tricks along the way for saving time and/or being more accurate and finally you will have done 100's of practice GMAT questions.
You can go on a GMAT prep course or get a private GMAT tutor. This will help motivate you to study (because you will have paid a good deal of money to improve and you will have a set study plan). If you have a private tutor then you can have a course which is more tailored to your needs.
Alternatively, you can opt for self study and hit the books. You will still be able to get help from other students if you join one of the many forums on the web.
