It depends on the type of fish. Some are vegetarian, other eat live food, most will eat fish flakes. I give mine (a 300 litre mixed community tank) a mix of flake food, bloodworm pellets, fresh cucumber (that way my plants survive a little longer!) and once in a while they get live daphnia (water fleas).

There are several types of diets for fish because there are many kinds of fish. Hagfish and lampreys are parasitic on other fish, they don't eat them but feed off of their body fluids and tissue. Most of the cartilagineous are predatory and feed on various fish as well as other animals including seals and even man.The most varied diets come with the Osteoichthys (the bony fish) which eat infusoria, daphnia, tubifex worms, mosquito larvae, shrimp and crayfish, small aquatic birds (ducklings too), snakes, small animals such as mice, grapes, various other plants and fruit, other fish (including their own species), frogs, small turtles, and some marine species feed on gill and skin parasites from other fish (entering both the mouth and gill cavity to look for food. Many marine species eat coral, various worms, and even hermit crabs. One of the most infamous fish is the piranha which eat meat including men but its near cousin is a vegetarian. So it is safe to say almost anything that fits their mouth (with the exception of those with special teeth that allows them to take bit sized pieces off their victim) It is said that large fish such as the Jew fish could even swallow a person but there no confirmed reports of this

what kind of fish do you have? There are different foods for different kinds of fish. Go to your local pet store, tell them what kind of fish you have and ask them to show you the right kind of food to get. We give our saltwater fish a variety of foods. Some have teeth and need the ruffage to chew on, another needs algae. We have saltwater fish.
