I think it was a gross expansion of the US misunderstanding of the world. US people tend to think all the world needs to assimilate into US values.
You see this in work, products, culture, food etc.
"The middle east is not like the USA and therefore is wrong."
I think all the WMD, terrorism, oil debates are just a smokescreen for a trigger happy response to a lack of will to understand other cultures.
Any country born out of arms struggle ( inc USA ) will always resort to this type of negotiation, because there was bloodshed at the nations birth they see the gun as a solution.
I notice no-one has tried to bomb Sweden, Switzerland, Fnland, Norway....recently anyway.

After 9/11 the President needed to respond so he was advised to confront certain regimes one being Saddam's. As usual the left liberals in the media distort truth and attack there own country yet there's no constructive arguments on how to deal with these tyrants. Many in Iraq are happy that Saddam and his regime have been confronted and taken out just ask the kurds. I wonder if these same cowards would have showed outrage to the reaction after Pearl Harbour? It seems to me the flag these cowards salute is a white one.

I think that they thought that they could win a war quickly and with few American casualties. It was the same mistake they made in Vietnam.
So the Fairy tale scenario was.... A quick victory; thousands of happy Iraqis waving the Stars and Stripes; death or jail of all from the old regime; Iraq becoming friend of the West; opening up of the Iraqi oil sector to western oil companies; huge inward investment; Iraq leaving OPEC; Iraqi oil flowing at huge rates within a year or so; positive effect of availability of Iraqi oil on world energy markets; secure supplies of Iraqi oil for the US market; booming Iraq reconstruction gives West huge commercial opportunities; world stock markets boom; OPEC marginalised; Iran seeing what collaboration with the US could bring and starts to want part of the action as well; Iraq and Iran together become America's best friends; Republicans win every election for the foreseeable future; Bush becomes a revered Grand Old Man of US Politics; everybody loves him; The Saudis get worried by the US becoming less dependent on them; Saudis offer to get Bin Laden; they get him; Bush even more revered and his brother wins 2008 election; US the much loved power in the Middle East; peace between Israel and the Arab world brokered by Jeb Bush; Disneyland opens in Riyadh...
or something like that!

The main reason is to keep the war away from their home and they've succeeded in that while made the rest of the world a bit more dangerous
The second reason is to secure the oil reserves and regulate production and prices as China had begun to put pressure on the oil markets.
The third is to give some help to Israel as Iraq was one of main supporters of PLO. This has to do with the Jewish lobby in Washington.

Because of the oil, but it was disguised as 'Let's get Saddam'. But if there was no oil there would've been no war. Pity the energy and money spent on war wasn't spent on looking at alternative energy sources. Of course, that would never happen, cos the US likes their SUVs and gas-guzzling cars too much. I had a bad feeling when GWB came into power - I thought it was just indigestion but unfortunately not... he a baaad man.

To make a long story short,...US is trying to do any means to benefit the nation, whether it's immoral or not. And the oil that comes with this package was a big deal for US.
I think Bush should get his a** kicked, he got what he wanted and he's still on his killing spree. Sending his own countrymen to death and killing innocent Iraqis too. If he was so uprighteous, why didn't he spend all his effort on the real terrorist Osama Binladen and hang that guy?!

Bush junior wanted to finish the work in Iraq that his father left unfinished. The cost did not matter. This was all about receiving parental approval.
There is also the extreme theory that Christian fundamentalists want Armagedon. This requires a war in the Middle East so that they all go to heaven. (Some hope!) I don't think that this theory holds up on the basis that most people don't win.
The first theory is the most likely.
They believed that the Iraquis would welcome them as saviours but would you welcome those who had cut off your electricity and water?

Two main reasons.
1) Retaliation for the 9/11 attacks, even if it was retaliation against the wrong enemy.
2) Oil/Petrol interests of the USA.
