Many centuries ago deep in the African jungle an elephant and a snake were walking along. The elephant was taking a bath and the snake was looking for something to eat. The snake couldn't find anything to eat and the elephant couldn't stand up anymore. The snake went into a pile of hay. The village people thought the snake was hay because it was camouflaged in the yellow hay. So they brought it back to the village to make a hut. They were trying to use mud so the roof would stick together and not fall off. So the snake turned a shade of grey and the snake ran off.
The elephant found the snake and the elephant was very afraid of the snake so he stood up and escaped. The snake kept following the elephant until the elephant got tired. Even though the elephant was tired it still tried to escape from the snake. Finally when it was exhausted it faced its fears and tried to fight the snake. The elephant ears were tied in a knot and the snake was tied in a bow. So finally the snake jumped on the elephant. It got stuck right on the elephants face because of the mud that dried. The snake tried and tried but it could not get off the elephant's face. That is the legend of how the elephant got its trunk.

if you read the "Just So" stories by Rudyard Kipling, you'll find that one baby elephant was tricked by a crocodile, who caught the tip of his nose, but a snake wrapped himself around the hind legs of the elephand and also around a rock and pulled back.
so the nose yielded, and became a trunk
and once back home the baby elephant found that it could reach for fruit better, fight better, wash itself better.
