BEIJING -- A crocodile zoo in south China's island province of Hainan has started selling its animals to local meat lovers in an effort to raise money, a zoo official said Tuesday.
The Nantai Crocodile Lake Zoo, home to over 3,000 crocodiles, started the trade late last week, offering the exotic meat at 216 yuan (27 dollars) per kilogram, said Zheng Yi, the zoo's director.
"So far we've managed to sell the meat of one or two crocodiles a day," Zheng told Agence France-Presse by telephone. "If there is a market, we plan to sell 2,000 crocodiles that way."
He said the zoo was forced to take the drastic step to survive, but added potential buyers had nothing to fear. "The meat is definitely safe," he said.

It sounds very contradicting ... a zoo is suppose to preserve wildlife and protect endangered species and what they're doing in China is not what zoos are suppose to do. I think they are more concerned in protecting the jobs at the zoo than the wildlife there. I've been to a zoo in China once and it was pretty sad. The animals weren't really being taken care of and sadly the lion's cage was the same size as the peacock cage :( So in selling the crocs the zoo may be ending their suffering? You can argue both ways.

It turns out the equal as some other meat that men and women consume, if the animal is ample then I do not see a crisis. I are living in Australia and crocodile meat is eaten right here additionally. But crocodiles are not endangered so ethically I do not see a crisis.

I would buy it. Kroc-meat is very tasty. No, not being cynical here. There is no difference between cow meat, pig meat, chicken or crocodile.

Many African wildlife parks sell their animal meat too. Some years they have to shoot 50% of life stock to make the other 50% survive the summer. They collect the dead animals and make steaks out of them. Even canned antelope. I think it is a great solution.

Crocs are not an endangered species. In fact, in many parts of Florida they have regular hunting seasons. They taste like really good chicken.

Crocodile meat is good. Don't knock it until you've tried it. And for that matter, so is bald eagle eggs.
